Short Communications Production of Mannitol by Streptococcus Mutans
نویسنده
چکیده
amMannitol was produced as an end product when resting cell suspensions of strains of Sl~rptococ~s mutcms were given high levels of sucrose or glucose. The presence of mannitol in the supernatant from glucose incubated cells and the occasional detection of mannitol-lphosphate suggest that mannitol was formed by a reduction of fructose-6-phosphate. This pathway would permit the regeneration of NAD under anaerobic conditions, thereby permitting maximal catabolism of hexoses via the glycolytic pathway.

Mannitol transport in Streptococcus mutans.
A hexitol-inducible, phosphoenolpyruvate-dependent phosphotransferase system was demonstrated in Streptococcus mutans. Cell-free extracts obtained from mannitol-grown cells from a representative strain of each of the five S. mutans serotypes (AHT, BHT, C-67-1, 6715, and LM7) were capable of converting mannitol to mannitol-1-phosphate by a reaction which required phosphoenolpyruvate and Mg2+. Ma...

Background and Objectives: Dental caries, caused by oral microbial flora, is considered as one of the most common infectious diseases in human. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of short-term consumption of probiotic yogurt containing bifidobacterium lactis on salivary streptococcus mutans and lactobacilli in students with initial stages of dental caries. Materials and Methods:...
متن کاملInvestigating the antibacterial effects of some Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and acetobacter strains killed by different methods on Streptococcus mutans and Escherichia coli
Although there are many health advantages assigned to different live bacteria such as probiotics, some health threatening effects have also been reported. For example, live bacteria can transfer antibiotic resistance genes to other commensal and opportunistic bacteria of gastrointestinal tract. Recently, it was shown that using killed bacteria have some advantages over live ones. In this resear...
متن کاملComparison of Antimicrobial Effects of Matrica Herbal Mouthwash and 0.2% Chlorhexidine on the Growth of Streptococcus Mutans, Actinomyces Viscosus, and Enterobacter Cloacae: A Short Report
Background and Objectives: Mouthwashes are commonly used to reduce the harmful effects of oral bacteria. The purpose of the present study was to compare the antibacterial effects of Matrica and Chlorhexidine 0.2% mouthwashes on common microorganisms in periodontal diseases. Materials and Methods: This is a laboratory study in which disc diffusion method was used. The diameter of the inhibition...
متن کاملRecovery of Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sanguis from a dental explorer after clinical examination of single human teeth.
Certain aspects of the bacterial flora adhering to a dental explorer following a tactile diagnostic examination of a single tooth were investigated. Plaque present on the explorer was dislodged, and suspended into a reduced transport fluid by sonification. After serial dilution, suitable aliquots were placed on a high sucrose-containing medium, and on a mannitol medium. Colonies resembling Stre...
